Decorating Your Bedroom Wtih Shabby Chic Decor
Shabby chic consists of items of furniture and linens that are inherited pieces, things uncovered when you clean out the basement, garage or attic; or treasures you find at good garage sales, flea markets, antique stores, thrift shops, and estate auctions. Imperfections, like scratched or distressed woods, peeling paint, or chips on a chest or table make them even more desirable. You want them to look a bit worn and well used, but they should really be in sound and durable shape. So lets pick some items for your shabby chic bedroom!
Primitive wooden shelves, an antique dresser, perhaps a pair of leggy night stands, with layers of white paint over distressed wood that is beginning to peel would be perfect. You want them to have a drawer to put your reading glasses and a book in. A bit of hand carving on the table top and edges will give it the elegance youre looking for. Remember that you want the room to have a tasteful but worn appearance.
A rustic wood or wrought iron headboard is appropriate in this bedroom. A comforter set that is soft and satiny will be perfect for the bed. Patchwork quilting and some hand embroidery will not only give you that vintage look, but will also keep you warm on those cold winter nights. Your linens and bedding should also have the shabby chic appearance. A few antique-looking throw pillows and a battered old trunk at the foot of the bed will make you feel like you stepped back in time.
Stretched or framed embroidery, tintype photos, and an antique mirror on the wall will add to your shabby chic bedroom. A tall mirror, crowned and framed in weathered wood and painted white will carry your theme up your walls. Use plenty of pictures and maybe even a wall sconce to balance out your wall treatment.
Dont forget the windows! Aged fabric is the best, but make sure it is sheer to keep the room looking light and airy. Cotton eyelet or lace is what you want, and if it has yellowed a bit with age it is even more perfect!
Delicate glass knicknacks belong in this room, as well as a hanging chandelier of crystal, glass candle holders and vases. A tall, graceful lamp on your night stand, of stone with crystal drops will tie it all together for you. No fancy shadea basketweave will go well here.
