One of the keys to a soft bed is the quality of the comforter. There is nothing like crawling into bed to snuggle up with a soft and fluffy  after a hard day's work. Here are a few tips to picking out your bed's centerpiece for enjoying a good night's sleep.

When choosing a new comforter for your bedroom, one of the main factors you need to consider is the size. A proper fitting comforter should fall ¾ the way down each side of the bed, and should generally cover where the bed and the box spring meet without touching the ground. A twin-sized comforter should fit a twin-sized bed, but it is always a great idea to measure each side of the bed and the distance from the top of the bed to the base of the box spring and the floor to conclude what the best size comforter will be for your bedroom.

The main quality that makes comforters different from the typical blanket is the use of insulating pockets throughout the construction of the product. Typically, you will find that the most common fillers of comforters are polyester batting, wool, silk or down feathers. When buying a comforter, pay attention to the fill power to measure the quality of the overall product. You'll find that a larger fill power will have a greater number and stronger clusters of material. Normally, this number will translate to the amount of warmth, but with down, a high fill power equates to greater strength and insulation. Each type of filling contributes to the overall weight and level of insulation of the product.

Polyester batting: This synthetic or "man-made" material. Since polyester is not normally a soft material, manufacturers combine it with cotton to create a softer texture. The more cotton added, the softer and heavier the comforter will be. Polyester batting comforters are normally the most inexpensive option of bedding materials, making it a great option for children's bedding as well as the choice for those who are allergic to feathers.

Wool: This material is used to make organic and environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic bedding. Wool comforters are surprisingly lighter in weight than most comforters are, and depending on the fill weight, you can harness as much warmth out of a thin wool comforter as you can with a thick and fluffy down comforter.

Silk: This is another hypoallergenic material that incredibly soft to touch. While silk comforters appear flat and lifeless as a bed top, they are surprisingly warm for their weight. This is a great choice for bedding in warmer climates and during summer months.

Down Feathers: This filling comes from ducks and geese feathers. Goose feathers tend to be the softer and fluffier of the two, and are typically the material of choice for premier comforters. Down feathers allow the comforter to be softer than polyester, and more flexible and fluffier than wool or silk. If you're looking for a comforter that acts like a gigantic fluffy cloud of comfort hovering over your bed, it's going to be filled with goose down feathers.

Furthermore, have been many strides over the years to improve the reduction of allergens within bedding feathers. Some goose down comforters are filled with specially treated down that is guaranteed for a month to be allergy free. Also, special fabrics combined with a comforter protector help make comforters leak proof, preventing the down from wiggling its way out.
