Feather Comforter Cover

What Are Some Of The Differences Between Duvets And Comforters?

When it comes to the differences between duvets and comforters just what you mean can often be decided by geography. Depending on what continent you are on, the definitions are quite far apart. The availability of either of them depends on where you live.

The French word duvet means eiderdown. Eiderdown is the soft under feathers of a specific duck. Duvet has nothing to do with eiderdown in the US. At least it has nothing to do with ducks.

But even in France, duvet is used for more than duck feathers. It refers to a puffy quilt that is filled with some sort of stuffing. Usually the stuffing is down, but silk and cotton and man-made fibers are available.

The key difference between a duvet and a comforter in Europe is that a duvet is used to replace both the blanket and the top sheet. A typical inn or hostel in Austria will use a duvet and no top sheet. Making the bed and changing the linen is easy. Just change the duvet cover and half the job is done.

This avoids having to use a bedspread as well as the top sheet. No tugging and smoothing and straightening to get the spread just right. Just a snap and you are done. In the US a comforter is often used in place of a bedspread as well.

But since the word duvet came across the Atlantic, it has taken on a few new meanings. Especially in ads for bedding, duvet has come to mean just about anything. Top sheets have nothing to do with duvet in the United States.

In fact, in the US duvet and comforter are pretty much considered the same thing. Duvet seems more up scale but you can find duvet covers and comforter covers in the same part of the store. A store that specializes in bedding will likely make the differences clear. They are selling culture and elegance as well as bedding.

Here a comforter can have a separate cover or stand-alone. It is also used most commonly with a top sheet. The cover is not always changed along with the bed linen. The stuffing can be just as varied as in Europe too. And, if a comforter is getting a bit worn a cover will make it like new.

Duvets, at least in Europe, are never used without a separate cover. They have plain cloth on both sides, and are not supposed to be used with a top sheet. The covers can be simple or wildly expensive. The covers are used as decorative items rather than the duvet itself. In America, they are used exactly the same way as comforters.

Really, the differences between duvets and comforters depend on geography. In the US a down comforter needs a cover. A comforter does not. It seems the word down or down alternative is what makes needing a cover important. In Europe, the difference lies in using or not using a top sheet. But you know what you want whatever you call it.
