Kids' Behavior - Setting The Limits And Getting The Results You Want

Have you set down what sort of behavior you are expecting from your child? Kids' behavior problems usually stem from the fact that these unacceptable and acceptable behaviors have not been clearly defined at all. Maybe it is all a bit vague or worse still that each spouse has a different tactic or strategy so good cop and bad cop parenting often brings disastrous results!

Do you lecture your kids? When you are telling them what is acceptable or not, you really have to keep it short and to the point. We have to remember that kids have an attention span which is very short and they are very easily distracted. If you go on and on, then the chances of them taking all that in, is very slim indeed.

Then we have to make sure that the good behavior gets noticed and praised too. Who doesn't like praise! The praise should be linked to a reward if possible and it should happen immediately after the good behavior as that will help to reinforce it especially with younger kids.

Bad kids' behavior has to be dealt with by consequences. Again, these have to be realistic and immediately applied so that there is no doubt at all in the child's mind why he is facing this negative consequence or having a privilege removed. In this way, the bad behavior will hopefully be reduced or even eliminated over time.

What do you do when kids' behavior at school is heading for a collision course and he will certainly fail? There is no need to do anything. This is the best lesson he can learn if he has not been paying attention or not doing his homework. It is a natural consequence of his actions.

When my cousin was accused of bad behavior at school, my uncle and aunt railed against the headmaster and defended their son. They also despised the headmaster's authority in front of my cousin!

Very often parents do this and sometimes even try to get the teacher to change the grade if the kid is failing. They are missing out on a golden opportunity here. They are preventing their children from learning and experiencing the natural consequences of their actions. They chose not to do the homework or behave badly and this is the result. Relying on their parents to get them out of trouble is never going to make them into responsible adults.

These are just a few of the strategies you can easily adopt if you follow a child behavior program in the comfort of your home. You will never have to visit a therapist or pay excessive fees for somewhat doubtful advice.
