Gardening Tools And Implements - 2 Types Of Devices You Should Know About
There are two types of devices used to protect plants:
1. Those used to provide mechanical protection for the plants, and
2. Those used to administer insecticides and fungicides.
The most useful device is a covered frame, which is used to protect the plants. This consists of a wooden frame about eighteen inches by two square feet and eight feet high, which is covered with glass, mosquito netting or cloth. Glass and cloth covers provide additional advantage as it retains heat and protects plants from cold weather. These devices can be extensively used to plant cucumbers, melons and other vines that need protection from the cold. Stiff collars made out of tin, tarpaper or cardboard are simple devices used to protect young cabbage or tomato plants from the cutworm. The collars are tall and large enough to put around the stem and penetrate into the soil an inch in length.
The powder gun is a device used to administer pesticides. The gardener can equip himself with a hand powered compressed air sprayer, which can be used for liquid sprays. It should ideally have an automatic mist-making nozzle, which is a convenient way to spray the plant. If the garden is a large one with plenty of trees requiring spraying, then, a barrel pump mounted on wheels will be needed to take care of the extensive work in the shortest possible time. Extension rods for spraying tall trees and vines are available and can be attached to both these devices. For a small-scale garden, a good hand syringe can be used. However, it is better to invest money in a small tank sprayer because it is a very convenient tool. It can hold large volumes of the chemical solution and can spray continuously on a larger area. A brass machine will last longer than other metal tanks, as these are likely to deteriorate faster due to corroding action of the strong chemicals being used.
A small garden will require very few items of harvesting equipment. Most of the harvesting equipment is mechanized and can be economically utilized for long tracts of land. A spade, a prong-hoe and a spading fork can provide the necessary assistance for harvesting activities. The onion harvester attachment with the double-wheeled hoe can be used to loosen beets, onions and turnips from the soil. It can also be used for cutting spinach. The hand-plough can be run on either side of deep growing vegetables like carrots and parsnips to loosen them out from the soil. To pluck fruit from tall trees, one can use a wire-fingered fruit-picker by securing it to a long handle. However, the hybrid varieties of plants are short and the fruit can easily be picked by hand.
Another essential gardening tool is a good pair of pruning shears. This will easily take care of the pruning required for the plants. Another useful item is a sharp jack-knife. Both these items together will take care of all the pruning jobs in the garden. Very little attention is given to the procurement of stakes and trellises for the garden. These are very essential items used to support the plants, vines, and will give a good and neat appearance to the garden if used wisely. If these items are stored and maintained properly during winter, they will last for years.
Before purchasing garden tools, it is best to conduct a small study on the varieties available and their suitability for your garden. It is prudent to invest a little extra money to purchase tools and implements of good quality. A cheap or poor quality item will be troublesome to use and may not last long. With proper care and maintenance, these tools will prove to be worth the price, by a long and satisfactory use. One can spend a few dollars a year to procure a complete set of gardening tools and implements, which will assist to make gardening a pleasurable activity.
