Why Machine Washable Duvets are Beneficial to Allergy Sufferers
It is not uncommon for people to admit they rarely, if ever, wash their duvets. Very few of us in Britain manage to wash our duvets every six months and surveys show that many of us are likely to be sleeping under duvets which are riddled with dust mites and dead skin. In fact, tests carried out on 10 duvets at the University of Worcester a few years ago found they each held up to 20,000 live house dust mites. The worst case was a duvet that had not been washed for 11 years and contained 45g of debris including skin scales and house dust mite faeces.
Sadly for some, the debris contained within a duvet can result in serious implications on one's health as the contaminants can cause symptoms of asthma, rhinitis and conjunctivitis and irritate existing cases of eczema. Though anti allergy bedding is widely available much of it has been treated with chemicals in which the dust mites simply cannot survive. The best way of actually eradicating these little creatures, however, lies simply in washing your bedding at 60 degrees centigrade. This temperature, or hotter, will kill off and remove all those dust mites and their allergens from your duvets and pillows.
